Do a Rambo or dress up your dog: 10 ways to recycle old ties

Men who buy a new suit in the summer suit sales can have fun and stay green when throwing old clothes away.

TieWarehouse.co.uk, the UK’s leading online tie retailer, has published a handy fun guide to recycling ties.

The website’s Gary Baker said: “As you clear out your wardrobe and come across a couple of kipper ties, or a grotty dirty paisley tie, don’t just throw them away. There are many creative ways you can recycle your unwanted ties.”

Tie Warehouse’s top 10 ways to recycle old ties are:

1. Do a Rambo: Wrap a tie around your forehead, grab a toy gun and some grenades, and scuttle round your office on your knees. Dart from desk to desk keeping a beady eye out for gunmen behind the photocopier. Won’t do much for your career prospects, but will keep your colleagues well defended.

2. Protect your knees and elbows on the half pipe: Another one for the executive having a mid-life crisis – wrap old ties around your knees and elbows while using your son’s skateboard. Might prevent broken skin; no chance against broken bones.

3. Emergency present wrapping: An old tie will make a great ribbon on a present. Not recommended for anyone important you don’t want to offend.

4. Have a retro day: Take all your old ties to work and wear the worst. If you really enjoy it, perhaps you’ll find your 1990 Global Hypercolour t-shirt when you get home?

5. Make a costume for the kids: Yay, it’s dress up like dad day. Make sure they are safe when playing with your ties, and they remind them to copy your grumpy work face.

6. Keep one in the car: Probably no good as a tow rope or emergency fan belt, but great for scrubbing dried flies off your windscreen.

7. Lasso cattle: Tie a few ties together and hope the knots will withstand the strength of one ton of beef.

8. Make a comfort blanket: Your old ties kept you safe at work decades ago, so why not take them apart and turn them into a comfort blanket for home.

9. Dye a new tie: Might take some experimenting, but can you turn an old tie into a new favourite? Don’t get caught in the rain when you’ve got your new tie and a crisp white shirt on, though!

10. Dress up your dog: Think how cute Fido will look with your old tie on. Maybe even take
him to work – at least no one can complain he's not dressed appropriately!
