How to Tie a Tie
4 In Hand Knot: A Basic Tie Knot
If you're starting out learning how to tie a tie, then this basic tie knot is the ideal starting point. This method of tying a tie is very easy to learn and will work with most neckties. Have a look at the video first of all, then follow the pictures and instructions while looking in a mirror. Once you've accomplished this simple tie knot, have a look at the Half Windsor tie below for a slightly neater knot.

 |
Step 1. Put the tie around your
neck. Make sure that the front of the tie is showing and that
the wide end is about 20 inches below the narrow end this should
hang about 12” / 30cm lower than the thin end. The wide
end should be on the left side and the narrow end on the right
side. |
 |
Step 2. Bring the wide end across the front
of the narrow end. Make sure that it is not too loose or tight. |
 |
Step 3. Bring the wide end around and behind
the narrow end. |
 |
Step 4. Bring the wide end around and behind
the narrow end again. This forms both the loop and front of
the knot. |
 |
Step 5. Bring the wide end up and behind
the loop. |

How To Tie A Half Windsor Knot
The half Windsor tie knot is slightly more advanced than the 4 in Hand knot above, but once accomplished it provides a neater and more sturdy way of tying a tie.
| |
| Step by Step |
 |
Step 1. Put the tie around your neck. Make sure that the front of the tie is showing and that the wide end (A) hangs around 12” / 30.5cm lower than the thin end (B). |
 |
Step 2. Bring A across the front of B. Make sure that it is not too loose or tight. |
 |
Step 3. Bring A around and behind B to form a loop. |
 |
Step 4. Bring A up and over the loop. |
 |
Step 5. Bring A through the loop. If your tie gets a little loose at this point it does not matter as long as it is not so loose that it loses the shape you have just made. |
 |
Step 6. Bring A across the front of B again. This time A should finish on the opposite side that it did in step 3. |
