BBC newsreader Simon McCoy was seen recently sporting a novelty dolphin-themed yellow tie during a breakfast broadcast, and it got me wondering about the appropriateness of novelty ties in such a serious environment. Now to be fair, Simon’s tie wasn’t horrendous, and from a distance it would be hard to distinguish that it was in fact covered in leaping dolphins, but somehow the severity of the devastating earthquake on the news at the time seemed to clash horribly with the gaiety of a novelty tie. Simon, novelty ties have their place (we stock around 300 designs, so you’re not alone in liking them!), but perhaps your job requires something a little more serene? So, does the BBC have dress policy covering neckwear? Do we really care?
