What’s Sarong With That?!

September 2nd, 2010 by swagger_blog · Comment on this

It may be 12 years since David Beckham was snapped wearing a sarong on holiday with Victoria, but the football star is still making headlines for his style choices. This time, though, we are given a sneak peek into his childhood fashion as he discusses his Pageboy outfit as a seven-year-old with a US sports channel. Turning down the traditional suit, young David opted for knickerbockers, long white socks and ballet slippers.

Revealing Steve McQueen as his style icon, Beckham now admits that although he feels good when he’s in a suit (and let’s be honest, he looks pretty darn good, too) he also feels just as comfortable in a jeans and t-shirt. This is a man who epitomises the idea that if you feel good, you look good, regardless of whether or not something is deemed “fashionable”.

The pink nail varnish and women’s underwear (well, his wife’s anyway) may have been pushing it a little too far, but there is nothing more attractive than a man who is relaxed and confident in his wardrobe. Beckham, we salute you!

Celebrity Faux Pas or Latest Fashion Craze?

August 27th, 2010 by swagger_blog · Comment on this

Jessica Alba stepped out recently in a pair of baggy-bottomed trousers and was moments later roasted for what the media labelled “nappy pants”. I wouldn’t be so quick to scoff if I were you, as give it a week and everyone will be wearing them.

Well, maybe not, but the media jump on the fashion faux pas bandwagon so fast they seem to forget that celebrities are the ones who not only follow the trends but more often than not set them too. Any person in the public eye, no, scrap that, anyone popular and noticeable enough could wear a dress made out of bin liners and the following morning enthusiasts will be imitating their “style”.

Think of Lady Gaga and how her extravagant head wear in the form of over-sized hair bands and hair pieces were instantly mocked, and then subsequently hit the shop stands. Think of Mean Girls, when Lindsay Lohan’s character tried to tarnish alpha mean girl Regina George’s reputation by cutting strategically placed circles into her vest and then watching in horror as girls desperate to be like her did the same to their clothes.

The What Were You Thinking Pages in Heat collate various celebrity fashion “disasters”, although ironically often with the same celebrities who also adorn the This Week’s Best Dressed pages. The thing about these stars is that they look sickeningly good even when they’re wearing something hideous; it’s no wonder we’re so confused about what is and isn’t fashionable! I hate to say it, but even Jessica manages to pull off the “nappy” look, and although it may not become the next fashion craze I’m betting at least one Alba fanatic dares to mimic her look. Would you?

Leonardo’s got everyone in limbo!

August 27th, 2010 by swagger_blog · Comment on this

It’s amazing to think that Leonardo Di Caprio is only 35 years of age, yet the Hollywood actor is arguably in his prime. This has never been more evident than with the recent success of the global phenomenon Inception.

As well as being the highest paid actor of 2010 at $50 million (just for Inception alone!), Di Caprio consistently demonstrates a smart look, both in his movies and in his personal life.

He’s leaving them all behind – Al Pacino, Robert De Niro – and many would assume that this is just from his superb acting ability…but maybe the secret of his success is in his wardrobe? I’ll leave that decision up to you guys.

What Factor? X Factor!

August 20th, 2010 by swagger_blog · Comment on this

Image courtesy of Metro.co.uk It hardly feels like a year ago that Jedward split the nation, yet the time has already come for the X Factor to once more grace our screens and consume our Saturday evenings; yet again Monday mornings will be filled with discussions and debates regarding the injustice over the recent act to be sent home.

Who will receive title of Best First Audition, how many people will Simon cause to weep, which act will win the show (surely it’s about time a group had the honour…), and, more importantly, who will be the best dressed Judge? With Dannii and Cheryl absent for most of the audition process we will have to wait for the live shows to start before the style wars begin, but for now we can sit back and enjoy the tears, laughter and sheer horror at the various wannabes who take their place on that stage and desperately compete to be crowned X Factor Champion 2010!

Catch the first X Factor episode on Saturday 21st August, ITV1, 7:30pm.
